The Feel-Good Factor of Volunteering
Many of us know that volunteering is a great way to gain new skills and experience, meet new people and make a difference to local communities. It’s also a brilliant opportunity to explore a new country or city.
Take for example, LHA London’s volunteering programme which has provided the first stepping stone for many young people from all around the world to build a base in London. British Citizens, EU nationals and young people entering the UK as part of the Youth Mobility Scheme are just a few examples of those you’ll meet when joining the programme. They all come together in London to live and volunteer in a safe and inclusive co-living community. There are over forty nationalities represented on the programme and even more languages spoken.
Volunteers are a big part of the success of LHA London – especially the ‘giving back’ to help the charitable aims of the organisation and its belief that the cost of accommodation shouldn’t be a barrier to young people whatever their chosen career or education path in the Capital. The contribution of the volunteers allows LHA to keep accommodation affordable and also to work with a range of other partner charities who specialise in providing support to young people experiencing homelessness.
As well as getting free shared accommodation and full board, volunteers at each of LHA’s 14 London hostels assist with the day to day running of hostel operations. This can include anything from lending a hand front of house, dealing with guest enquires and supporting the housekeeping team to helping the chefs in the kitchens serve up some delicious meals.
For many volunteers, moving away from home and trying something new can be a leap of faith – especially as they immerse themselves into a new culture, begin to improve their language skills or start their studies in London. However, for the majority of people who come through our doors to volunteer, they never look back and realise it was one of the best decisions they ever made.
Ready to take the leap? We’d love to hear from you…
