New year’s resolutions that are perfect for hostel life
New year, new you? No, we’re just kidding! But the start of a new year is a great time to make some positive changes to your life. So, with a renewed mindset on January 1st, most people set themselves some new year’s resolutions. It’s important to ensure these changes fit in with your current lifestyle and are achievable, otherwise sticking to them will be difficult! Here’s a few we think would be great for 2019 and are all easy to fit in with hostel life.
Learn a new language
Knowing a second language is a great skill to have. Not only does it mean you can go to another country and feel confident in speaking their language, it also opens up new job opportunities and gives you the chance to establish cross-cultural friendships. Our hostels are culturally diverse places and you are sure to find friends here from many different countries. Why not pair up with a friend and teach each other your languages? Or volunteer with us to perfect your English language skills!
Make a new friend
You can never have too many friends, right?! Moving to a new country and living in a new place can be really difficult. This year, why not try and reach out to someone new, whether it’s at work, university or around the hostel (hostels are a great place to meet new people). It could really help someone who may not know many people in the area and be struggling to settle in, and it will give you an additional friend to have fun with. Win, win!
Get a new hobby
London is full of fun things to do. So this year, try something different and get yourself a new hobby. Hobbies are great for making friends, building confidence and expanding your skillset whilst having lots of fun. There are lots of different kinds of things you can try in London for example rock climbing, trapezing, wine blending or even paddle boarding! Check out this list of weird and wonderful hobbies in London!
Be fit and healthy
It’s important to stay fit and healthy, not just for your body but for your mind too. Small lifestyle changes like eating healthier meals, cutting down on alcohol and trying to do some exercise each week are easy to manage and can make a huge difference. For some healthy meal ideas, you can try some of these lovely BBC Good Food recipes. And luckily for you, most of our hostels have gyms on site which residents can use for free. This makes it easy to fit a workout in around your other commitments. No excuses!
Learn something new
For 2019, learn something new! Learning a new skill is beneficial for your everyday life, it’s mentally stimulating and can lead to a new hobby or even a career change/side job. It’s easy to pick up new skills living in a hostel as you can learn from each other. You could try pairing up and learning to cook, play a musical instrument, a new sport or even some new IT skills. LHA London also offer volunteer roles where you can learn lots of new skills including English, communication skills and general work-life skills.
Hostels are a great place to meet new people and socialise. This year, why not try to go into the communal areas a bit more often and get involved with whatever is going in, whether it’s cooking a meal, watching some TV, playing a board game or just having a chat.
Life can be busy in London and sometimes we can go a while without speaking to those closest to us. An easy thing to commit to doing this year is talking to your loved ones more often. Why not take half an hour to facetime or call a family member or an old friend you haven’t spoken to for a while? We’re sure it will make their day!
