Meet the Volunteers – Sonia

Name: Sonia

Volunteer at Davies Court (Canary Wharf)

What brought you to London?

I came to London to complete my masters degree at Glasgow Caledonian University. Upon completion of my degree, I decided to stay and settle in London.

How long have you been living here?

I joined LHA London in September 2019. I was a resident first and subsequently returned as a volunteer.

How did you hear about LHA and volunteering?

I was a resident first and subsequently returned as a volunteer.

Describe a typical ‘day in the life of a volunteer’ at LHA?

My duties are for 20 hours a week and then I have time to explore the city

What do you like best about being a volunteer?

I support the team at Davies Court with housekeeping duties, so majority of the tasks involve making sure guests feel welcome and facilities are maintained to a high standard.

What do you like best about being a volunteer?

I love the location. I love meeting residents and other volunteers too. I am very grateful for the flexibility that it provides, I am able to offer my 20 hours to support LHA but at the same time maintain a part-time job which unfortunately has been impacted due to COVID.

What has it taught you / experience gained?

I am very grateful for the flexibility that it provides, I am able to offer my 20 hours to support LHA but at the same time maintain a part-time job which unfortunately has been impacted due to COVID.

Any funny stories?

I have some funny fire evacuation drill stories to tell.

What’s your London secret (best place to go/visit)?

I have no specific place to mention but I believe the best way to explore the city is by walking, especially to find the best takeaways.
