It’s ALL about the Experience!
Young apprentices can be some of the most dedicated workers, bringing fresh perspectives and new skill sets into the workforce. Not only do they provide opportunities for employers to ‘grow their own’ and develop a crucial talent pipeline for businesses, but they can also strengthen and diversify the workforce.
As National Apprenticeship Week 2021 (8-14 February) gets underway, which aims to shine a light on the amazing work being done by employers and apprentices across the country – now is the time to think about signing up for an apprenticeship or internship here in London.
Apprenticeships in England have a rich history and can be traced as far back as the middle ages where it was custom for upper-class parents to send their sons to learn skills from a craftsman or trader. Since the early days of formal apprenticeships, their popularity and scope have grown. In 1914, the three most common apprenticeships were in dressmaking, engineering, and carpentry. Nowadays, they cover anything from finance to aerospace and everywhere in between.
As an apprentice, the majority of your learning is done on the job – so if you’re an experiential learner (i.e. someone who prefers to learn by doing), an apprenticeship will be ideal. By learning on the job you’ll also gain loads of job specific skills. Many young people or recent graduates struggle to find work as they don’t have the necessary experience whereas apprentices never have that issue as they have learnt in a ‘real-world’ environment.
Although every apprenticeship role differs enormously, you can expect your day to be both varied and challenging. As well as practical training on the job, the majority of apprentices receive off-site training which gives you new skills to put into practice in the work environment and ready to take on the next stage of your career development.
With news last year from the UK’s Prime Minister promising ‘every young person’ the ‘chance of an apprenticeship or an in-work placement’ – never has there been a better time to carpe diem!
