Your Guide to All Things Christmas in London

Christmas London

Christmas is fast approaching, and if you want to get into the Christmas spirit (why wouldn’t you?!) then there are plenty of things in London to help you. London is buzzing with festive fun at this time of year, from Christmas lights to ice skating, to cinematic experiences and quaint markets. So, make the most of the lead up to Christmas and tick off some of these must see and do’s in London this year.

Christmas Festivals

For the full festive experience, you can visit some of the festival-style events London has to offer. The two most popular are Winterville and Winter Wonderland. Winterville takes place on Clapham Common and has your typical ice rink, fairground rides and food stalls however it also includes some quirkier things like a circus, 18+ puppet show, roller disco, mini golf and a cinema experience. Winter Wonderland is very similar; however, it has been around longer and is probably better known. It is based in Hyde Park (close to lots of our accommodation!) and includes similar attractions such as an ice rink, food stalls, fairground rides, markets, cinema, comedy club, ice bar, circus and Bavarian Village. So, if you want to get lost in all things Christmas for the day or evening then here is the place to do it!

Get Your Skates On

Who doesn’t love wrapping up warm and gliding around on the ice, especially at Christmas time when London opens its magical ice rinks at famous spots. This year you can get your skates on at Somerset House, Hampton Court Palace, Tower of London, Natural History Museum, Skylight at Tobacco Dock, Canary Wharf, Winterville at Clapham Common or Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park. Or maybe you’ll backspin your way to a few of them!

Christmas Carolling

If you fancy a spot of Christmas Carolling this year, then there are plenty of places to hit those notes across London. Some very well-known carolling spots include St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. You can also find some carolling going on at the Royal Albert Hall, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square and Southwark Cathedral. So, warm up your vocal chords and head down there!

See the Magical Christmas Lights

There’s something very magical about all the lights at Christmas, and London has some great ones. If you want to see some extraordinary lights (over a million twinkling pea-lights and thousands of laser beams!) then why not take a trip to Kew Gardens. Alternatively, if you are happy to take a stroll around the streets of London you can see some stunning displays. We recommend Carnaby Street, Oxford Street, Bond Street, South Bank, Covent Garden, Regent Street and Seven Dials.

Enjoy a Christmas Show

Get lost in London’s theatre scene this Christmas. There’s plenty on offer, from The Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House to Snow White at the London Palladium. You can even watch some shows on ice for a really festive experience. If you want to get involved in a British tradition then why not try a Christmas pantomime?

Splurge on your Christmas Shopping

Where better to do your Christmas shopping than London?! If you are after some high street shops, then Westfields or Oxford Circus will have everything you need. We recommend taking a wander down to Knightsbridge and looking in some of the big department stores (Harrods and Harvey Nichols) as they really are magical around Christmas, even if it is just to stare in awe at their amazing window displays!

Get lost in the Christmas Markets

For a gift that’s a little different why not try some Christmas markets? London’s Southbank has a great Christmas Market, or there’s always Greenwich Christmas Market or Leicester Square Christmas Market. If you are heading to Winter Wonderland or Winterville they also have big Christmas Markets inside. Even if you don’t need a gift, Christmas Markets are sure to get you in the festive spirit with their food stalls, mulled wine and Christmas entertainment.

Cosy up with a Festive Film

Christmas is the only time we really get to watch Christmas films (without being judged!) so why not go all out and watch as many as possible! There are plenty of Christmassy screenings across London with pop up cinemas in both Winter Wonderland and Winterville showing all the classics. You can also watch Christmas films with a live orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall for a really unique experience! Or if you’d prefer to stay in and get cosy then grab one of your roommates and put something Christmassy on.

See a Ginormous Christmas Tree

What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than to gaze up at a massive Christmas tree full of glittering lights and decorations. Some of the best ones in London are located in Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, St Pancras, Claridge’s and the Victoria and Albert Museum. London’s biggest Christmas tree is located at Trafalgar Square and is an impressive 70 feet! So wrap up warm and get your dazzling lights and bauble fix!
